We had very little food left, and there was nothing to buy. People would queue in front of stores just in case, hoping for a delivery of meat, or toilet paper or butter.

But queuing was illegal. It had to be done very carefully.

My dad joined a meat queue. During the day it was OK, but if you wanted to keep your place, you had to queue at night too. It was dangerous, and besides, he couldn¿t wait outside in the snow 24 hours a day.
